Cape Town Blitz vs Paarl Rocks – Mzansi Super League 2018: Match Preview

Match Details:

Cape Town Blitz vs Paarl Rocks

December 07, 2018

Newlands, Cape Town

Venue:

The track at Newlands offers more help to the pacers in the second innings. All three games in the MSL that have been held here have been won by the team batting first, as the team chasing is often troubled by the seam and swing bowling that is on offer. Hence, the side winning the toss would look to bat first again.

Preview:

Cape Town Blitz, despite losing their previous encounter to Jozi Stars, are well-placed on the points table and are currently on top. However, they looked well below-par in the last match, with the bowlers going for plenty and the batters succumbing to pressure. But they will be playing at home and are aware of the conditions, which is going to prove an advantage.

Paarl Rocks will be high on confidence heading into the game as they defeated the Blitz early on in the league. They will be bolstered by the return of Dwayne Bravo and Cameron Delport, and they would hope that their experience can help the side script a few wins.

Paarl are fourth on the points table, with 13 points, behind Jozi Stars, who have 20. And with only the top three teams advancing to the play-offs, the visiting team would be eager to pull up their socks.

My dream XI for the Game:

WK

Quinton de Kock is one of the highest run-getters in the tournament, with 228 runs so far. The South African international scored 108 runs against the Spartans and also has a score of 74 to his name in the tournament. With a T20 strike-rate of 135.63 and truckloads of experience, de Kock remains a player to watch out for.

BATSMEN

I have picked 3 batters in my team – 2 from Paarl Rocks and Janneman Malan from Blitz. Malan has been the only consistent batsman from the side along with de Kock, having scored 279 runs in the tournament thus far. He is in fine form as well, scoring 77 runs in his last two games.

From Paarl, I have gone ahead with skipper Faf du Plessis, who is in consistent form and has also scored two fifties. The side will also expect a lot from Aiden Markram, who has been getting starts but is yet to capitalize on them.

ALL-ROUNDER

Dwayne Bravo’s feats in the format are well-known and he is a key player in both departments for Paarl. Andile Phehlukwayo has been the underrated star from South Africa and has been consistent this year, so he gets a look-in too. Mohammad Nawaz from Blitz is my third all-rounder. He has a decent economy rate of 6.78 in the tournament thus far, and even though the conditions will help the pacers, he has the skills to put pressure on the Paarl side with his miserly spell.

BOWLERS

My bowling side has 4 bowlers – two from each team. Dale Steyn and Nandre Burger from Cape Town have looked dangerous in the tournament. The South African international star has picked up eight wickets in six games and returned with figures of 3-0-21-2 in the previous encounter with Paarl. Burger has been impressive too, and was the standout bowler in the last game against Jozi Stars, picking 2 wickets.

Shamsi and Bjorn Fortuin complete my line-up. While the chinaman picked up 3 wickets against Spartans, Fortuin is among the top five wicket-takers in the league and also scalped four wickets the last time the two sides met.

Captain: Dale Steyn

Vice-captain: Quinton de Kock

Player to watch out for: Quinton de Kock

The keeper gets his team off to quick starts more often than not. With a staggering strike-rate and with the tendency to attack both pacers and spinners, the Blitz side will hope that their premier star can rise to the occasion again.
